Description
VAUBAN (Sébastien Le Prestre de). On the Attack and Defence of Fortifications. The Hague, Pierre de Hondt, 1737. In-4, fawn calfskin, triple gilt rule, coat of arms in the centre, decorated spine, red edges (contemporary binding). Posthumous first edition of the *Treatise on the Attack of Fortified Places*. The publisher has appended the short treatise *On the Defence of Fortified Places* (pp. 189–216), attributed to Vauban, although it in fact reproduces the bulk of Deshoulières’ *Discourse on the Defence of Fortified Places*. The work is illustrated with 36 fold-out plates depicting fortifications, tunnelling and mining techniques, etc. A copy bearing the coat of arms of President de Rieux. Gabriel Bernard de Rieux (1687–1745), the second son of the famous financier Samuel Bernard, was President of the Second Chamber of Enquiries at the Parliament of Paris and President of the Chamber of Accounts. There is a portrait of him by Maurice-Quentin de La Tour, which is one of the pastel artist’s masterpieces. The second volume, published by de Hondt in 1742, is missing; it contained military treatises, most of which were not written by Vauban. Corners and edges restored, upper hinge split, covers stained, paper slightly yellowed.
