Description
VERTOT (René Aubert de). History of the Knights Hospitaller of St John of Jerusalem, subsequently known as the Knights of Rhodes, and today as the Knights of Malta. Paris, Rollin, Quillau, Desaint, 1726. 4 volumes in-4, brown calfskin, decorated spine, interior lace, marbled edges (contemporary binding). First edition, ‘the finest and most highly regarded’ of this comprehensive work on the Order of Malta, according to Saffroy. This reference work, compiled by Abbé Vertot (1655–1735), contains the annals of the Order of St John of Jerusalem from its foundation up to the 1720s. The final volume contains the Order’s old and new statutes and the list of knights. The illustrations comprise 71 separate portraits engraved on copper by Laurent Cars, including that of the author after J.-F. Delyen on the frontispiece, 6 fold-out maps and plans, and 25 vignettes by Scotin at the head of the chapters. From the library of Dr Maurice Villaret, with bookplate. Damaged edges and corners with slight losses, some leather wear on the covers, a few scattered foxing spots. Saffroy, I, no. 5420 – Cohen, 1011 – Brunet, V, 1149 – Hellwald, 35.
