Description
BONNET (Charles). *La Palingénésie philosophique, ou idées sur l'état passé et sur l'état futur des êtres vivants*. Geneva and Lyon, J.-M. Bruyset, 1770. 2 volumes in-8, marbled sheepskin, gilt decoration, marbled edges (contemporary binding). A new edition, published a year after the original, of this essay at the crossroads of biology, metaphysics and Christian theology, in which the Genevan naturalist and philosopher Charles Bonnet (1720–1793) argues that ‘all living beings, even plants, possess a soul undergoing transformation and indefinite development, and that this soul successively inhabits increasingly perfected bodies’ (Caillet, no. 1403).
A fine copy from the library of Hyacinthe Gariel (1778–1849), a counsellor at the Royal Court of Grenoble and a bibliophile, with a stenciled bookplate.
A few foxing spots; a faint stain on one endpaper.
