Description
CARENA (Cesare). *Tractatus de officio Sanctissimæ Inquisitionis, et modo procedendi in causis fidei*. Bologna, Giacomo Monti, 1668. Folio, stiff vellum (contemporary binding). An important manual for inquisitors, expanded in this edition to include a treatise on witchcraft trials by the same author (pp. 435–448).
Carena’s work saw at least eight editions following the original, published in Cremona in 1631. It is divided into three parts, followed by two treatises annotated by the author: *Quæstiones quindecim ad inquisitores* by Gui Foulques (who later became Pope Clement IV) and *Instructio seu praxis inquisitorum* by Francisco Peña. Numerous passages deal with the suppression of witchcraft.
A fine copy in contemporary vellum.
Van der Vekene, no. 184.
