Description
FRAZER (James George). The Golden Bough. A Study in Magic and Religion. Paris, Schleicher frères & Cie, 1903–1911. 3 volumes in-8, midnight blue half-shagreen, spine decorated with gilt fillets, gilt head, untrimmed, cover (contemporary binding). First edition of the French translation, by R. Stiébel and J. Toutain, based on the second English edition, published in 1900. It comprises three volumes, subtitled: I. Magic and Religion; Taboos. – II. Ritual Murders. The Perils and Transmigrations of the Soul. – III. Agrarian and Forest Cults.
An essential work by the Scottish anthropologist J. G. Frazer (1854–1941), ‘The Golden Bough made an unprecedented contribution to the contemporary history of ideas. First and foremost, it brought anthropology into the realm of Western culture’, writes Nicole Belmont. It was of decisive importance to R. Kipling, E. Pound, W. B. Yeats, J. Joyce, D. H. Lawrence and T. S. Eliot, but also to Freud, who regarded it as ‘a treasure trove of valuable facts and insights. ’
From the library of Dr A. Garrigues, with bookplate.
Girdles slightly rubbed. The binding on vol. III is that of vol. II.
