Description
GUYON (Madame). Extract from *Reflections and Explanations on the Apocalypse* by M[adame] G[uyon], which contains some very fine passages but also an absurd form of spirituality verging on Quietism. 18th-century manuscript. 8vo, 218 pp., brown calfskin, decorated spine (contemporary binding). A precious contemporary manuscript copy of the *Explanations on the Apocalypse*, written in a dense but very legible hand. It deals at length with the General Idea of the Virtues by Mother Marie des Anges.
‘A great mystic who filled the 18th century with resounding controversies ’ (Caillet), Jeanne-Marie Bouvier de la Motte, known as Madame Guyon (1648–1717), following the instruction of Father Lacombe, preached a mystical doctrine inspired by the Quietism of Miguel de Molinos, whose teachings she made known in France. She was supported by Fénelon, who was also sympathetic to Quietism, with whom she exchanged a wealth of correspondence.
