Description
HERMES TRISMEGISTUS. *The Pimander of Hermes Trismegistus*, translated by Tommaso Benci into the Florentine language. Florence, n.p. [Lorenzo Torrentino], 1549. Small 8vo, supple vellum, smooth spine with title in ink, red edges (modern binding). Second vernacular edition of the Pimander, the first treatise of the Corpus Hermeticum, translated into Tuscan by the poet Tommaso Benci (1427–1470), who based his version on the Latin translation by his friend and mentor Marsilio Ficino (1433–1499). The first edition of Benci’s *Pimandro* had come off the same presses a year earlier. The dedicatory epistle to Pier Francesco Riccio is signed by Carolo Lanzoni. A very fine and rare Florentine print, adorned with a wood-engraved mark on the title page. Repair to the corner of the title page with a few letters retouched on the reverse. Adams, H-350 – Gamba, 1515 – Ferguson, I, 389 – CNCE 22588 – Caillet, no. 5092 (1548 ed.).
