Description
LENGLET DU FRESNOY (Nicolas). A collection of old and new treatises on apparitions, visions and dreams, with a historical preface. Avignon and Paris, J.-N. Leloup, 1751–1752. 4 parts in 2 in-12 volumes, marbled half-basane, smooth decorated spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). An important work, the first of its kind published in France.
This ‘thoroughly documented history of everything relating to these unsettling phenomena’ (Caillet) brings together 45 exceedingly rare treatises on witchcraft and apparitions, reprinted following an interesting preface by Lenglet Du Fresnoy (1674–1755) and accompanied by one of the earliest bibliographies on the subject, in the appendix, citing over 400 authors and 600 works.
A worn copy: the binding is worn with losses, the hinges are split, there are small tears on a few leaves, and a hole has removed a letter from the half-title page of the second part of vol. II; the title of this latter part is missing. The general title of the first volume is dated 1752; the others are dated 1751.
