Description
LERMINA (Jules). Incredible Stories. Paris, L. Boulanger, n.d. [1885]. Square 8vo, midnight blue half-maroquin, spine decorated with repeated gilt skulls, gilt headband, untrimmed (Allô). A rare first edition of this collection of six fantastical short stories: ‘Les Fous’, ‘Le Clou’, ‘Maison tranquille’, ‘La Chambre d’hôtel’, ‘La Peur’ and ‘Le Testament’, which Jules Claretie, in his preface, places ‘between Hoffmann’s romantic visions and Edgar Allan Poe’s poetically scientific conceptions’.
The edition, printed on fine vellum paper, is illustrated with seven engravings based on drawings by Amédée Denisse.
A very fine copy in a contemporary macabre binding by Charles Allô (1824–1890).
Unidentified stamp on the half-title page.
