Description
[MASONIC MANUSCRIPT]. CHEREAU (Antoine-Guillaume). Explanation of the Philosophical Cross of the Chev∴ Souv∴ Princ∴ R∴ [Cross], dedicated to the G∴ Or∴ of Portugal… Manuscript dated 5806 [1806]. In-4, comprising 21 pp. and 2 plates (including one fold-out), burgundy half-basane (modern binding). A precious and rare autograph manuscript of this Masonic treatise, illustrated with two pen-and-ink plates, including a large and beautiful folded plate depicting the Philosophical Cross of the high degree of Sovereign Knight Prince of the Rose-Cross. The author is Antoine-Guillaume Chereau, an honorary officer of the Grand Orient de France, and a member of the Sovereign Chapter and the Lodge of the Knights of the Cross. The text was printed in Paris in 1806 in 8vo format.
The Bibliotheca Esoterica catalogue describes this manuscript as follows: ‘An original manuscript by Chéreau which differs from the printed edition in its illustration. This contains not only an additional plate, showing the alphabet and numerals of the Knights of the Rosicrucians, but the other, in folio format and folded, also drawn in pen, differs completely from that included in the printed edition. Chéreau, who signed his original ‘engraved by F∴ Chéreau 5805’, indicated the colours in the margins. It is therefore interesting to note the alterations made by the lithographer. ’
