Description
NOSTRADAMUS. The Prophecies of Mr Michel Nostradamus, Physician to King Charles IX and one of the most eminent astronomers who ever lived. Lyon, n.p., 1568 [Troyes, Pierre du Ruau, c. 1649]. 3 parts in one in-8 volume, soft vellum, plain, unmarked spine (contemporary binding). A rare and curious edition of Nostradamus’s prophecies, containing in an appendix the ‘Admirable Predictions’ by Vincent Sève, published in 1605. The title page is adorned with a woodcut portrait of Nostradamus. What is curious about this backdated edition is that it was produced on behalf of enemies of Cardinal Mazarin, who had two ‘false quatrains’ – numbered XLII and XLIII – added to the Seventh Century; the first of these reads: ‘When Innocent takes Peter’s place, the Nizaram [Mazarin] of Cilicia will be held in high honour, but afterwards he will sink into the quagmire of a civil war…’ (f. 93v°). The edition cannot, therefore, predate 1649. Klinckowström believes it was printed by Pierre du Ruau in Troyes. From the library of the Convent of Nigeon, also known as the Convent of the Bonshommes, in Chaillot, with a handwritten ex-libris and call number on the title page. A small tear at the top of the title page, which does not affect the text; foxing and faint water stains due to the quality of the paper; a small worm-eaten area at the bottom of quire D (ff. 25–31). Le Pelletier, I, 35 – Klinckowström, no. 23 – Chomarat, no. 105 – Caillet, no. 8070 – Dorbon, no. 6360.
