Amsterdam, Jean-François Bernard, 1733–1736. 2 folio volumes, fawn calfskin, double blind-stamped rule, gilt coat of arms in the centre, decorated spine, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition. This supplement to *Religious Ceremonies and Customs of Idolatrous Peoples* (1723–1737), published by Jean Bellon de Saint-Quentin, brings together *Treatise on Superstitions* by Abbé Jean-Baptiste Thiers and *A Critical History of Superstitious Practices* by Father Pierre Lebrun, along with other essays and remarks by Jean-François Bernard. The volume is illustrated with 13 separate plates by Bernard Picart devoted to superstitious practices: enchantments, divining rods, talismans, etc. A very fine copy bearing the coat of arms of a contemporary. From the libraries of Karl August Böttiger (1760–1835), archaeologist and director of the Dresden Sculpture Museum, with an ex-libris stamp; and Salmon, with a stamp on the title pages.
