Description
PIGNORIA (Lorenzo). *Mensa Isiaca*, in which the rites and images of the sacred rites of the Egyptians are set out and explained on the accompanying bronze plates. Amsterdam, Andreas Frisius, 1669. 2 parts in one in-4 volume, hard vellum binding, double fillet binding with fleur-de-lis at the corners and a central medallion embossed in blind, spine decorated with blind fillets, red title label, plain edges (contemporary Dutch binding). Third edition, the finest and best illustrated, of this work by the Paduan antiquarian Lorenzo Pignoria (1571–1631) on the Isiac Table, a bronze tablet adorned with inlays of coloured metals depicting the Egyptian gods and their symbols, as well as the mysteries of Isis. This precious artefact, studied by Athanasius Kircher, is now housed in the Egyptian Museum in Turin.
The work is followed, in the second part, by two further studies: *Magnæ deum matris Idææ et Attidis initia*, by Lorenzo Pignoria, and *Manus Æneæ, Cecropii votum referentis, dilucidatio*, by Giacomo Filippo Tomasino, who is also the author of the concluding dissertation on the life, library and collections of Pignoria.
The edition is illustrated with a frontispiece title page engraved by Abraham Bloteling, a repeated title vignette, and six plates—three of which, each over one metre long, consist of three engravings mounted together – and 35 engravings in the text, including 9 full-page engravings.
A very fine copy, a rare complete edition with all its plates.
A few faint foxing spots.
