Description
SAINT-MARTIN (Louis-Claude de). *Le Nouvel Homme*. Paris, Impr. du Cercle social, Year IV [1796]. 8vo, marbled half-basane, untrimmed (Early 20th-century binding). A rare first edition. This remarkable work on the occult harmony of the universe, influenced by the thought of Jacob Boehme, encapsulates the entire philosophy of Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin (1743–1803), known as the Unknown Philosopher, the most brilliant French theosophist and illuminist of the 18th century. He exerted a significant influence on Romanticism, particularly on Sainte-Beuve and Balzac, who read his works with admiration. Corners damaged, scattered pinholes and uniform foxing; a tear without loss to the first two leaves. Caillet, no. 9780 – Dorbon, no. 4315 – Guaita, no. 936.
