Description
TAISNIER (Jean). *Opus mathematicum octo libros complectens*. Cologne, Johann Birckmann and Werner Richwin, 1562. Folio, hardback in vellum (contemporary binding). A rare first edition of one of the most important treatises on palmistry of the 16th century, written by the Belgian scholar and astrologer Jean Taisnier (1509–1562), tutor to the pages of Charles V, who subsequently served at the Emperor’s court, accompanying him on the expedition to Tunis (1535) and to Italy.
Taisnier explains palmistry, physiognomy, omens and astrology with great clarity and in an accessible manner, within everyone’s grasp. The first edition of 1562 is considerably rarer than its 1583 reprint.
The text contains a wealth of woodcut illustrations, including a large portrait of the author on the reverse of the title page, repeated on the final leaf, over 1,770 palmistic hand diagrams, often taking up half a page, as well as 22 beautiful zodiacal figures, 83 horoscopes, astral charts and diagrams, 23 tables, 41 physiognomies or portraits… and the printer’s mark on the title page.
From the library of the astrologer Julevno, alias Jules Evenot, with an ex-libris stamp dated 1891 in Paris.
Binding discreetly restored, title label added later, foxing and water stains.
