Description
VAN DALE (Anton). *De oraculis veterum ethnicorum dissertationes duæ*. Amsterdam, Hendrik Boom and the widow of Dieter Boom, 1700. Quarto, ivory vellum, plain spine, speckled edges (contemporary Dutch binding). Second, expanded and corrected edition, illustrated with 8 beautiful plates of fantastical scenes attributed to Romeyn de Hooghe, ‘most of which are highly curious’ (Caillet). Anton van Dale (1638–1708) was a physician and Anabaptist preacher in Haarlem. This treatise on oracles, which had previously been published in 1683, is the principal source for Fontenelle’s treatise. The author sets out to prove that the devil has never produced any oracles and that these are merely the result of the priests’ schemes to perpetuate superstition. Flecks of rust; dust-stained covers. Caillet, no. 10999.
