Description
WIRDIG (Sebastian). *Nova medicina spirituum: curiosa scientia et doctrina unanimiter hucusque neglecta*. Hamburg, Gottfried Schultze, 1673. 2 parts in one small 12mo volume, grained calfskin, decorated spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). Rare first edition, illustrated with two double-page allegorical plates drawn and engraved by Cornelius Nicholas Schurtz.
This treatise by the German physician Sebastian Wirdig (1613–1687) is a ‘most curious work, in which one finds, clearly expressed, the current foundations of magnetism, suggestion and mental treatment... It encompasses an entire philosophical doctrine that bears close similarities to the ‘Eternal Doctrine of the Magi’”, according to Caillet.
From the library of Hyacinthe-Théodore Baron (1686–1768), dean of the Faculty of Medicine in Paris and a bibliophile, with bookplate.
Restored binding, foxing.
