Description
[BARTHÉLÉMY (Jean-Jacques)]. The Young Anacharsis’s Journey to Greece, in the mid-fourth century before the Common Era. – A collection of maps, plans, views and medals from ancient Greece. Paris, De Bure l’aîné, 1789. 7 volumes in-8 and an atlas in-4, long-grain red morocco, gilt roulette, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets, daffodil-coloured edges (original binding). Second edition of this famous work recounting the travels of a young Greek man in the 4th century BC, serving as a pretext for a meticulous and highly erudite description of Greece on the eve of the assassination of Philip of Macedon.
A complete copy of the atlas, in a modern imitation binding, comprising a large fold-out map of Greece and 30 double-page maps and plates, mostly engraved by Guillaume Delahaye after Barbié du Bocage.
Light foxing and water stains in the text and on a few plates; spines of the text volumes slightly faded; a small tear on one cover; a minor repair at the top of the atlas title page.
