Description
BOILEAU (Jacques). History of the Flagellants, in which the proper and improper use of flagellation amongst Christians is examined. Amsterdam, François van der Plaats, 1701. In-12, speckled calfskin, decorated spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). First French edition, translated from the original Latin published in 1700.
Although the theologian Jacques Boileau (1635–1716), brother of the poet Boileau-Despréaux, argues in this work in favour of religious mortification, he also refers to certain erotic uses of flagellation which led to his book being placed on the Index. The final chapter states, in particular, that it is contrary to ‘modesty and propriety, for both men and women, to whip one’s own buttocks’ (p. 301).
Worn binding with damage and slight losses, foxing.
Caillet, no. 1328.
