Description
FABRICIUS HILDANUS (Wilhelm). *Observationum et curationum chirurgicarum*, centuria secunda. Geneva, Pierre and Jacques Chouët, 1611. In-12, brown calfskin, bound with a double blind-stamped band (17th-century binding). A very rare first edition of the second centuria. The first centuria was published in Basel in 1601 and the following five in various cities up to 1641. The text is illustrated with some twenty engraved plates. Fabricius von Hilden, the restorer of surgery in Germany, was one of the most eminent surgeons of his time. He was the first to remove a gallstone from a living person, to extract a metal splinter from the eye using a magnet, and devoted particular attention to the study of gunshot wounds and fractures. Restored binding, spine re-bound, a few foxing spots, minor worm damage to numerous leaves. Heirs of Hippocrates, no. 393 – Garrison-Morton, no. 5570 – Waller, no. 2906.
