Description
MINERALOGY. – A set comprising two works in five volumes. BEUDANT (François-Sulpice). Elementary Treatise on Mineralogy. Paris, Verdière, 1830–1832. 2 volumes in-8, havana half-shagreen, spine decorated with panels featuring double gilt lines, speckled edges (r. p. Michel). Second edition, partly original, expanded by one volume compared with the original of 1824. It contains 24 fold-out plates (14 more than the original), including 5 coloured ones, and 7 plates separate from the text, most of which are folded. F.-S. Beudant (1787–1850) succeeded Haüy in 1822 as Professor of Mineralogy at the Sorbonne and became Inspector-General of Studies in 1839. He also published a *Treatise on Physics*, a *French Grammar* and a *Latin Grammar*. A fine copy in a signed binding of the period. Waterstains, occasionally pronounced. A very slight tear to one cap. Not listed in *Sinkankas*. BRARD (Cyprien-Prosper). *Mineralogy Applied to the Arts, or A History of the Minerals Used in Agriculture, Home Economics and Medicine; the Manufacture of Salts, Fuels and Metals; Architecture and Decoration; Painting and Drawing; the mechanical arts; and jewellery-making. Paris, F. G. Levrault, 1821. 3 volumes in-8, green half-shagreen, gilt fillet, plain spine with longitudinal decoration, mottled edges (as per Michel). First edition, illustrated with 15 folding plates, including one in colour, depicting apparatus for cutting stones and ores. This treatise on ‘industrial mineralogy’ is a revised and expanded version of the *Traité des pierres précieuses* published in 1808 by the mineralogist Brard (1786–1838), former director of the Servoz mines in Savoy, where he had been the first to use anthracite as a fuel. A fine copy in a signed binding of the period. Waterstains; one loose leaf (II, 107). Sinkankas, no. 898.
