Description
NETHERLANDS. – A set of two works in three volumes, bound with the Montmorency coat of arms. [DUMONT]. Genealogy of certain families in the Netherlands. Amsterdam, n.p., 1774. – Genealogical compendium of families originating from or settled in the Netherlands. Rotterdam, n.p., 1775. 2 volumes in-8, speckled calfskin, triple gilt rule, coat of arms in the centre, decorated spine, mottled edges (contemporary binding). First editions, attributed sometimes to Dumont, sometimes to the Chevalier de Holleber d’Ascow. A second part of the second volume was published in 1778. Each volume is adorned with a title vignette and approximately 35 finely engraved heraldic figures. A copy bearing the coat of arms of Anne-Léon II de Montmorency (1731–1799), Marquis of Fosseux and later Duke of Montmorency, from the library of Sosthène II de La Rochefoucauld (1825–1908), Duke of Bisaccia, with bookplate. Some scuffing and a few foxing spots. [NENY (Patrice-François de)]. Historical and Political Memoirs of the Austrian Netherlands. Neuchâtel, Fauche, Favre & Compagnie, 1784. 2 parts in one in-8 volume, marbled calf, triple gilt rule, coat of arms in the centre, plain decorated spine, red edges (contemporary binding). First edition of this seminal work on the history of Belgium at the end of the Ancien Régime. It is dedicated to Emperor Joseph II and features his portrait, engraved by J. B. Martin. The second part bears its own title, stating: ‘New edition printed from the author’s original manuscript, revised, corrected and expanded with several chapters and articles omitted from the single-volume edition published in Neuchâtel. Paris, and is located in Brussels, B. Le Francq, 1784. This is a supplement corresponding to Volume II of the second expanded edition published in the same year. This first volume is the only one to have been published. A copy bearing the coat of arms of Anne-Léon II de Montmorency (1731–1799), from the library of the Duke of Bisaccia, with an ex-libris. Some scuffing and foxing; the outer margin of pp. 209 and 211 of the original edition is slightly reduced, and the margin of page 401 has been restored. The title of the second part has been removed by the bookbinder, who replaced it with that of Volume I of the same edition. Sold without return.
