Description
ROYLLET (Sébastien). *Les Fidèles tableaux de l'art d'écrire*, comprising a series of examples through which the principles are expounded. Paris, Jacques-François Chéreau, n.d. [c. 1767]. In folio, half-vellum, smooth spine, covers of marbled paper (pastiche binding). Second, expanded edition of this calligraphic album by the master scribe Sébastien Royllet (1699–1767), author of *Nouveaux principes de l’art d’écrire* (1731). It contains a portrait of the author, etched by Romanet after Forville, dated 1767, and 30 (out of 31) copperplate engravings by Baisiez, including 2 fold-out plates and several featuring two subjects. The first edition, published in 1764, contained only 10 plates. Plate no. 34 is missing. Handwritten initials ‘M.F.A.’ at the top of the title page. A small ink stain on a few pages, some slight soiling.
