Description
TERRASSON (Jean). Sethos: a history or life drawn from the anecdotal monuments of ancient Egypt, translated from a Greek manuscript. Amsterdam, published by the Company, 1732. 2 volumes in-12, marbled calfskin, triple gilt fillet, coat of arms in the centre, decorated spine, speckled edges (original binding). A new edition of this work, which brought Egyptian mysteries into vogue, published one year after the original. It contains two fold-out maps: one of Egypt and the other depicting the travels of Sethos. A copy bearing the coat of arms of Anne-Léon II de Montmorency (1731–1799), Marquis of Fosseux and later Duke of Montmorency. From the library of Sosthène II de La Rochefoucauld (1825–1908), Duke of Bisaccia (inherited from the Montmorency-Laval family), with bookplates. Scuffing, worn corners, two cracked hinges, minor worm damage to the spine of Vol. I, interior slightly scorched, small marginal tears not affecting the text on a few leaves and on the Map of the Journeys.
