Description
DESGODETZ (Antoine). The Ancient Buildings of Rome, Drawn and Measured with Great Precision. Paris, Jean-Baptiste Coignard, 1695. Folio, marbled sheepskin, triple binding, decorated spine, interior lace, marbled edges (contemporary binding). New edition, illustrated with an engraved title page and 137 plates, including 21 double-page plates, engraved on copper after drawings by the architect Antoine Desgodets (1653–1728), who had just been admitted to the Royal Academy of Architecture.
These drawings were produced during his stay in Rome in 1676–1677, at Colbert’s request; they were engraved and published at the King’s expense for the first time in 1682. ‘This work provides the first genuine series of measured drawings, which form part of one of the great French traditions’ (Fowler).
Caps and corners restored, one split spine, a few tears. Some foxing.
