Description
GUILLEMEAU (Jacques). On pregnancy and childbirth in women; on their care and how to deal with the complications that may arise. A comprehensive guide to infant nutrition. Revised and expanded to include several intaglio engravings, and descriptions of various secret diseases, with a treatise on impotence, by Charles Guillemeau. Paris, Abraham Pacard, 1621. 2 parts in one in-8 volume, soft vellum (original binding). A rare edition of this major treatise on obstetrics. This is a reissue of the 1620 edition under a revised title.
It is illustrated with an architectural frontispiece and engravings within the text, all engraved in copperplate by Isaac Briot.
Jacques Guillemeau (1550–1613) was a pupil of Ambroise Paré and became surgeon to Kings Charles IX, Henry III and Henry IV. His work contributed to advances in dentistry, ophthalmology and obstetrics. His son, Charles (1588–1656), helped to enhance his father’s reputation by revising and republishing his treatises. He appended to the edition his *Treatise on the abuses committed in the treatment of impotence in men and women*, with separate pagination and its own title dated 1620.
As Valérie Worth-Stylianou points out, ‘the work of the Guillemeaus, father and son, represents one of the most significant contributions of surgery to obstetric medicine prior to the era of Mauriceau’.
A copy bound in old vellum, with minor restoration to the title page and frontispiece and to a few leaves, and marginal water stains.
