Description
NOTARÁS (Chrýsanthos). A rebuttal of those things which are falsely, falsely and out of context regarding the Pilgrimage Site of Mount Sinai. Venice, Antonio Bortoli, 1732. Small quarto, paperback, with an ecru cardboard cover. An extremely rare first edition, printed in Greek in Venice. Online catalogues list only two copies, held in London (BL) and Bergamo (BCAM). Chrýsanthos Notarás was Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem from 1707 until his death in 1731. In 1728, he had published a *History and Description of the Holy Land*, which was the subject of ‘unjust, false and blasphemous’ criticism. This little work, published shortly after his death – edited by Nicéphore Marthales, abbot of Mount Sinai, according to the British Library catalogue – constitutes a brilliant refutation (antirrhesis) of these criticisms. A carefully cleaned copy in imitation cardboard binding. Minimal foxing on the edges; minor wormholes on the first two leaves. Papadopoulos, no. 4429 – Legrand, 18th-century Hellenic Library, II, no. 220 (‘extremely rare’).
