Description
LA TASTE (Louis-Bernard). Theological Letters to Writers Defending Convulsions and Other So-called Miracles of the Time. Avignon, Marc Chave, 1739–1742. 3 parts in 2 quarto volumes, marbled sheepskin, decorated spine, red edges (contemporary binding). A rare first edition of this primary source on the convulsionaries of Saint-Médard. It comprises twenty-one Theological Letters by Dom Louis-Bernard de La Taste (1692–1754), the nineteenth of which is particularly rare as it was banned by the Parliament of Paris. The author maintains that the miracles are diabolical; he explains their various motives and contradictions, and describes the convulsions of the possessed, diabolical magic, and the power of demons. The *Journal des convulsions* has been bound in at the end. Worn edges and corners, slight scuffing, scattered foxing. Caillet, no. 6175.
