Description
LLORENTE (Juan Antonio). A Critical History of the Spanish Inquisition, from the time of its establishment by Ferdinand V to the reign of Ferdinand VII. Paris, Treuttel & Wurtz, Delaunay, P. Mongie, 1817–1818. 4 volumes in-8, red half-maroquin with corners, plain spine with decoration, daffodil-coloured edges (contemporary binding). First French edition, translated by Alexis Pellier and illustrated with a frontispiece portrait engraved by Blanchard and a vignette bearing a coat of arms. ‘One of the finest histories of the Spanish Inquisition’ (Palau). This is the most highly regarded work by Abbé Juan Antonio Llorente (1756–1823), Secretary of the Inquisition from 1789 to 1791, who, following the abolition of the Inquisition in 1809, was entrusted by King Joseph with its entire archive in order to write its history. The author went into exile in Paris upon Ferdinand VII’s return to the Spanish throne. His work is highly sought after because it makes no attempt to conceal any of the Inquisition’s most heinous crimes. It was placed on the Index as soon as it was published and was not published in Spanish until 1822. A very attractive copy in a contemporary binding. Corners rubbed, a few faint foxing spots, ballpoint pen notes on the first blank page. Van der Vekene, 575 – Palau, no. 145349 – Caillet, no. 6733 – Quérard, V, 327.
