Description
[MANUSCRIPT]. A Treatise on Iconology, compiled from the works of the finest iconographers, and followed by instructive tables on hieroglyphs, emblems and symbols, as well as on the attributes of the various deities. Paris, 1806–1807. Large quarto, [2] folios, 627 pp., root-edged calfskin, gilt roulette, plain decorated spine (contemporary binding). An exceptional work of scholarship, presenting, in alphabetical order, the emblems, symbols and mythological attributes drawn from fables and myths; tables are included at the end and the volume comprises 6 plates, drawn in particular from Humboldt’s *Mexican Hieroglyphs of Vienna* and Otto Vaenius’s *Amorum Emblemata*. The title page reproduces the famous ‘Epistle to Father Bougeant’, composed in the 18th century by the renowned French poet Guillaume-Hyacinthe Bougeant. This 624-page volume constitutes a secret and previously unpublished intellectual laboratory of the First Empire. It is a vast, original research catalogue (listed as the 7th volume of *Belles-Lettres*), the author of which likely belonged to Fabre d’Olivet’s circle. Restored binding with skin cover and some missing sections.
