Description
MEUNG (Jean de). *The Mirror of Alchemy* by Jean de Mehun, a most excellent philosopher. Paris, Charles Sevestre, 1613. In-8, soft vellum with endpapers, smooth spine titled in black ink (Modern binding). A very rare alchemical collection, bringing together some of the fundamental texts of this science, beginning with the Mirror of Alchemy (Speculum alchemiæ), attributed here to Jean de Meung but elsewhere to Roger Bacon. This is followed by the Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus and its most famous commentary, composed in the 14th century by the Hortulain, as well as *The Book of the Secrets of Alchemy*, composed by Calid, son of Jazic the Jew (in fact Khâlid ibn Yazid, son of the Umayyad caliph Yazid I). A copy from the second printing (the first being dated 1612), bound without pp. 111–176, which contain Roger Bacon’s treatise *On the Admirable Power of Art and Nature*. The copy described by Dorbon exhibits the same characteristic. An old handwritten note on the title page: ‘In the second volume of the *Theatrum chymicum*, it is attributed to Roger Bacon.’ A small marginal repair affecting a few characters on two folios (a5 and e4). Dorbon, no. 3063 (‘A very rare work’).
