Description
VIGEON (Paul). Various pieces of evidence showing that the pagans wrongly sought to ascribe to some of their idols the attributes and reverence that belong to the true God... With an explanation of four emblems representing the four Elements. Paris, Jean Hénault, 1659. 2 parts in one in-8 volume, fawn sheepskin, decorated spine, marbled edges (contemporary binding). First and only edition of this very rare work of Christian apologetics, dedicated to Jean Dinet, Dean and Canon of Mâcon Cathedral, at whose parish the author held a benefice.
A beautiful frontispiece title page, engraved in intaglio, opens the volume.
The work is divided into three parts in which the author demonstrates that the pagans usurped the qualities and attributes of the three persons of the Holy Trinity by worshipping Mars, the Sun and Vulcan. The publisher has included, under a separate title and pagination, the *Explanation of the Four Emblems of the Elements*, in which Abbé Vigeon provides a theological explanation of the four elements as ‘traces and signs of God our Creator’.
From the library of Bernard de Noblet, Count of Chenelette, Lieutenant of the Marshals of France in the bailiwick of Mâcon, with bookplate.
Upper edge and corners worn; a small tear in the paper at the margin of pp. 51–54.
