Description
ALPINI (Prospero). De plantis Ægypti liber. Accessit etiam liber de balsamo. Venice, Francesco Franceschi, 1592. In-8, stiff ivory vellum, smooth spine, spotted edges (Modern binding). First edition of the first work on Egyptian flora.
The illustrations include a title vignette and 49 woodcuts in the text showing plant species, 38 of which are full-page. Among the species described are the coffee tree, of which the illustration is the first known representation, the baobab and the papyrus.

Prospero Alpini (1553-1617) published a work on Egyptian medicine (De medicina Ægyptiorum, 1591) and the present treatise on Egyptian botany following his stay in Cairo in 1581-1584 as physician to the Venetian consul Giorgio Emo.
Mottling, small wormholes in the margins of about forty leaves without any major damage to the text or illustrations.
