Description
BAYONNE. In-8, limp vellum, handwritten title on second board, traces of binding (contemporary binding). One of two editions of this extremely rare festive book commemorating the Entrevue royale de Bayonne, where the young King Charles IX stopped off in June 1565 during his grand tour of France, and where Catherine de Médicis met the ambassador of Philip II of Spain to discuss the repression of Protestantism in France. "It is one of the rarest entry books in existence", according to the supplement to Brunet's Manuel. Michel de Vascosan published two editions in the same year, one in in-4 format, the other in-8. Both editions are decorated with the same suite of eighteen woodcut emblematic pendants, the execution of which is attributed to Olivier Codoré, a cutter and engraver of precious stones attached to the court. This anonymous report contains "a detailed description of all the costumes worn by the king and the great figures of the court, an account of all the festivities offered to the Queen of Spain [Elisabeth of France, Charles IX's sister], the text of the carrousels and ballets, and lastly a drawing of the jewels that the knights who took part in her festivities presented to their ladies" (Picot). The masquerades and verse cartels inserted in the report have been attributed to Ronsard. A wide-margined copy (180 x 120 mm) in first condition. Mottling. Brunet, IV, 1143 - Picot-Rothschild, III, n°2163 - Brun, pp. 61 and 180-181 - É. Ducéré, Charles IX à Bayonne, Bayonne, 1889. Cf. on the in-4 edition: Mortimer, no. 204 - Watanabe-O'Kelly, no. 1633 - Brunet, Suppl. II, 424.
