Description
BONIFACE VIII. Liber sextus decretalium. Venice, Bartolomeo de Blavi and Andrea Torresano, 23 March 1485. - CLEMENT V. Constitutiones cum apparatu Joannis Andreæ. Ibid. 20 April 1485. 2 works in one volume in-4, cold-stamped fawn morocco on wood, double framed with roulettes set with multiple fillets, central rectangle decorated with a diamond-shaped fleuron struck five times vertically, four-ribbed mute spine, metal clasp clasps, modern fawn half-maroquin box (Period binding). Interesting and rare collection of two Venetian incunabula, comprising the Sext or sixth book of the Decretals, promulgated in 1298 by Pope Boniface VIII, and the Clementine and Extravagant Decretals promulgated by Clement V and his successors, with the gloss by the canonist Giovanni d'Andrea.
Both came from the presses of Andrea Torresano d'Asola, Nicolas Jenson's successor, and his associate Bartolomeo de Blavi, from Alessandria in Piedmont.
Admirable Gothic printing in red and black, on two columns, with the gloss framing the text. The titles, initials and rubrics, as well as the colophon and typographical mark, are printed in red, and the tree of consanguinity in red and black.
This copy is entirely rubricated and decorated with initials painted in blue, with two large watermarked initials in red and blue at the incipit of the Sexte and the Clémentines. Handwritten running titles, chaptering and foliation at the head of the page; handwritten table on a blank leaf at the beginning of the Clementines.
A precious copy in a contemporary binding from the Venetian monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore, with a contemporary handwritten bookplate in the colophon of both works.
Missing the first blank leaf of the Sexte (a1). Smudging at the foot of the first and last leaves, worm gallery filled in on the last two leaves. Binding restored, hinges redone, slight loss and worm work on the boards, clasp fasteners missing.
