Description
CLAVIUS (Christophorus). Astrolabium. Rome, Tipografia Gabiana for Bartolomeo Grassi, 1593. In-4, soft vellum, single fillet and gilt fleurons in the corners, smooth spine decorated, gilt and chased edges (Binding of the period). Rare first edition of this important treatise on the astrolabe, which contains "the first outline of the method of multiplication by means of circular functions which has received the name of prostapheresis" (Houzeau & Lancaster).
The work is illustrated with nearly 400 figures and diagrams in the text, including a woodcut astrolabe in the title, and tables showing the position of the sun in 1600-1603, sine tables, etc.
The Jesuit mathematician Christoph Schlüssel, known as Christophorus Clavius (1538-1612), translator of Euclid, was a member of the commission appointed by the Vatican to draw up the new Georgian calendar.
Copy in contemporary gilt vellum, with gilt and chased edges.
