Description
COLUMELLE. Les Douze livres des choses rustiques. Paris, Jacques Kerver, 1555. In-8, parchment, smooth spine (contemporary binding). Second edition of Claude Cottereau's translation, revised and expanded with notes by Jean Thierry. The 1551 original, reissued the following year, does not contain these notes.
The work is decorated with a title in a fine wood-engraved frame, populated with putti farmers and goat skulls, figures and diagrams in the text, ornamented lettering and banderols and, on the last page, the large typographical mark with the unicorn by Jacques Kerver.
De re rustica, composed around the year 42, is the greatest treatise on agriculture handed down to us by antiquity. It is divided into twelve books, dealing respectively with the usefulness and pleasures of the rural economy, how to sow and harvest fields, vines and orchards, the cultivation of vineyards, the measurement of time, livestock and their diseases, small livestock, the farmyard, beekeeping, gardens, the duties of the farmer and, finally, stewardship and cooking.
The work is also a great book on ancient gastronomy, giving precise instructions on the preparation of cheeses and mead, the cultivation of vines and the consumption of wine.
Handwritten bookplate dated 1753 on the title. From the library of the Marquis de Peigney, with bookplate.
Binding worn, spine and upper back cover loose, dampstaining.
Adams, C-2412 - Vicaire, 192.
