Description
DENYS THE CHARTREUX. In quatuor evangelistas enarrationes. Cologne, Peter Quentel, 1532. In-folio, half sow's skin stamped on exposed wooden boards, framed with cold roulettes on the spines, spine decorated in cold, traces of clasps (Germanic binding of the period). First edition by Dirk Loër at the request of Peter of Leiden, prior of the Carthusian monastery in Cologne, of this important commentary on the four Gospels by Denys the Carthusian.
The work is adorned with a fine woodcut title frame with vignettes, the arms of King Henry VIII of England, to whom the work is dedicated, and lettering engraved by Anton Woensam.
Denys the Carthusian (1402-1471), a Belgian theologian and mystic born at Ryckel in the county of Looz, was nicknamed the "Ecstatic Doctor" in honour of the learned works he wrote. He wrote over two hundred treatises, according to the catalogue he himself drew up, which has come down to us thanks to Trithème.
Attractive contemporary Germanic binding.
Some worm spotting, minor spotting and soiling, clasps missing.
Adams, D-579 - VD16: D1917.
