Description
[DION CASSIUS]. XIPHILIN (John). Εκ των Διωνος του Νικαεως Ρωμαικων ιστοριων Επιτομη. Dionis Nicæi rerum romanarum à Pompeio Magno ad Alexandrum Mamææ Epitome. Paris, Robert Estienne, 1551. 2 parts in one volume in-4, speckled calf, framed with cold roulette, ornate red morocco spine, crowned Dws figure at head, cold inner roulette, jonquille edges (Early 19th century binding). Greek editio princeps of the Epitome of Roman History by Dion Cassius.
This compendium, composed in the 11th century by the Byzantine historian John Xiphilin, is invaluable in that it covers lost parts of the original work of Dion Cassius, in particular books LXI to LXXX, the most important for Roman history.
A superb Greek edition based on an unpublished manuscript in the Royal Library and printed with the first cast of the King's Greeks designed by Claude Garamont between 1540 and 1550.
The Latin translation of the Epitome by Guillaume Le Blanc, Bishop of Toulon, in its original edition, published the same year by Robert Estienne, has been bound in. The title of the volume bears the coat of arms of Cardinal Georges d'Armagnac, the translation's dedicatee, in place of the olive tree mark.
Copy of Henry Cavendish (1731-1810), eminent physicist and chemist, famous for his very precise measurements of the gravitational constant, but also for his eccentricity, with his stamp on the verso of the title.
From the library of the Dukes of Devonshire, with the cipher of William Cavendish (1790-1858), sixth from the title, on the spine of the volume and the bookplate of Chatsworth Castle (1879, IV, p. 160), their stronghold in Derbyshire.
Old inscription at top of title. Marginal stain on 3rd leaf.
Renouard, p. 80, nos. 8-9 - Adams, D-513 and D-515 - Mortimer, nos. 170-171 - Brunet, V, 1504.
