[ESTIENNE (Henri). Conciones sive orationes ex græcis latinisque historicis excerptæ. S.l. [Geneva], Henri Estienne, 1570. 2 parts in one folio volume, stiff vellum, ribbed spine, red morocco title page, smooth edges (18th century binding). First edition of this anthology of speeches by Greek and Latin historians published by the humanist printer Henri Estienne. It was intended for politicians, lawyers and anyone who needed to practice the art of persuasion. Most of the Latin translations accompanying the Greek texts are by Henri Estienne. The last page of the first part is numbered 278, a sign of first printing. An attractive copy from the Venetian libraries of Giulio Cesare Ballino, with handwritten bookplate on the title, and Consul Joseph Smith, with engraved bookplate. Giulio Cesare Ballino († 1592), a Venetian lawyer, humanist and geographer, was a friend of Paolo Manuzio and Aldus the Younger, with whom he published several texts. Three of his sonnets were published in 1573 in Gabriele Fiamma's Rime spirituali. He was the author of an important topographical atlas published in Venice in 1569 under the title De' disegni delle più illustri città et fortezze del mondo. As for Joseph Smith (1673-1770), British consul in Venice between 1744 and 1760, he is remembered as a passionate art collector, who was notably the friend, patron and agent of Canaletto.
