Description
EUTROPE and Paul DIACRE. De Inclytis totius Italicæ provinciæ ac Romanorum gestis libri xviii. Paris, Geoffroy de Marnef, Gilles de Gourmont and Galliot Du Pré, 1512. In-folio, half marbled basane with corners, spine decorated (Late 19th century binding). Edition by Nicolas Maillard, a writer from Rouen, printed by Gilles de Gourmont on behalf of Galliot du Pré and Geoffroy de Marnef. It is typographed in Roman type, embellished with beautiful letters with a sifted background; the title and its frame are printed in red and black and accompanied by the bookseller's mark.
The illustration includes a suite of 90 vignettes (40 x 55 mm), 16 of which are repeated, depicting half-body figures (knight, emperor, etc.) beneath scrolls of foliage, and 2 larger vignettes (60 x 47 mm) showing the emperor holding the globe and a king leaning on the shield of Malta. These woodcuts appear to be copied from those adorning the Memorabilia gesta vivorum illustrium printed in Rome by J. Besicken and S. Mayr in 1494.
Moreau, II, n°310 - Brun, 185.
