Description
FILLASTRE (Guillaume). La Toison d'or. Paris, Antoine Bonnemère for François Regnault, 10 December 1517. 2 volumes in one folio, stamped saddle-skin over wooden boards, metal clasps (antique binding). Second edition of this extremely rare and important novel of chivalry, written between 1468 and 1473 by Guillaume Fillastre, bishop of Verdun, Toul and Tournai from 1461, who was also chancellor of the Golden Fleece and head of the Privy Council of Charles the Bold. According to Brunet, "the second edition is as rare as the first", which came off the same presses the previous year. It is in fact an exact reprint. It was printed in Gothic type on two columns by Antoine Bonnemère for the bookseller François Regnault. The work is decorated with 9 large illustrations and 69 woodcut vignettes in the text, initials with a riddled background and a large grotesque initial on the title of the second volume. The titles of both volumes bear the elephant mark of François Regnault. A fine copy formerly in a Germanic binding in stamped sow skin. Corners and headpieces restored, countersleeves renewed, some leaves mounted on tabs, small angular repairs affecting some letters on the first and last leaves. Moreau, II, n°1608 - Adams, F-454 - Brunet, II, 1258 - Graesse, II, 580 - Brun, 188.
