Description
[FRANÇOIS I]. [MAILLES (Jacques de)]. La Très joyeuse, plaisante et récréative histoire du gentil seigneur de Bayart composed by the Loyal Servant. Paris, Henri Loones, 1878. Large in-8, brown half-chagrin with corners, spine decorated, number on tail, untrimmed (contemporary binding). First critical edition, published by the scholar Joseph Roman (1840-1924) for the Société de l'histoire de France, in a handsome volume luxuriously printed on laid paper.
It is based on the first edition of the biography of the "Chevalier sans peur et sans reproche" by his comrade-in-arms Jacques de Mailles, printed in Paris for Galliot du Pré in 1527.
A copy of the publisher, Joseph Roman (1840-1924), bound in his cipher and with his bookplate.
It is enriched with a sixteenth-century manuscript relating to the knighting of François I by the knight Bayard the day after the battle of Marignan. This original document, which is lined and incomplete, is bound at the head of the volume with this autograph caption signed by Joseph Roman: "This fragment of a request presented to King François I by the town of Embrun is the only proof we have that this prince was knighted by Bayard as historians agree. In fact, the 15th line of the letter states that the king received "the order of knighthood from the hands of Mon[sieu]r de Bayard...".
