Description
HERODIAN. Ιστοριων βιβλια H. Histor[iarum] lib[ri] viii... Historiarum Herodianicas subsequentium libri duo. S.l. [Geneva], Henri Estienne, 1581. 2 parts in one volume in-4, stiff vellum with covers, double cold fillet and small fleuron at the corners, smooth spine decorated in the same way, mottled edges, traces of binding (Binding of the period). Important Greco-Latin edition by Henri Estienne.
The work is printed on two columns, the first part presenting the Greek text of Herodian's Histoire des empereurs romains de Marc Aurèle à Gordien III and its Latin translation by Ange Politien, revised from top to bottom by Henri Estienne and augmented by his corrections, additions and comments in the margins.
The second part contains the editions of the first two books of the New History by the pagan and anti-Christian Greek historian Zosimus, in Greek and in the Latin translation by Henri Estienne. The next four books of this essential source for the history of the last centuries of the Western Roman Empire were not published in Greek until the 1590 edition.
An attractive copy of interesting Oxonian provenance, having belonged to Arthur Charlett (1655-1722), who was Master of University College, Oxford for thirty years, with his engraved bookplate; to the library of Pusey House, Oxford, stamped Bibliotheca Puseiana, handwritten Leg. C. C. Balston AD 1892 and blacked-out call number at tail; and to Mark J. Lowe, Balliol College, Oxford, with dry stamp.
Small worm damage in the upper margin of the volume.
