Description
HOURS for the use of Rouen. [Normandy, circa 1430-1450]. Manuscript on parchment of [90] ff (i8, ii7, iii10, iv8, v6, vi8, vii8, viii8, ix8, x6). In-8 (135 x 90 mm), tan glazed calf, fillets and cold fleurons (modern binding). Very incomplete manuscript in gothic script over 13 lines, advertisements at the end of the quires, headings in red, numerous initials in burnished gold on pink and blue backgrounds with white highlights (1 to 2 lines high), line ends in pink, blue and burnished gold with white highlights, one larger initial (fol. 17) introducing the Tierce of the Hours of the Virgin, in pink with white highlights and coloured scroll decoration (4 lines high) and extension in the margins with vine leaves and golden besants and flowers.
This manuscript was copied and decorated in Normandy in the 15th century. Norman saints are included in the litanies (saints Ouen, Romain, Germain, Gildard, bishop of Rouen, Taurin d'Évreux [fol. 40v]). Despite their very incomplete nature, the Hours of the Virgin clearly follow the liturgical usage of Rouen (see Text below) and the list of responsories for the Office of the Dead, complete with nine lessons, is also in accordance with the usage of Rouen.
Text
ff. 2-23, Extracts from the Hours of the Virgin: the following antiphons and capitulae are found, suggesting a liturgical use for Rouen: [laudes] antiphon "Assumpta es", capitula "In omnibus"; [prime] antiphon "Maria virgo", capitula "Per te dei"; [tierce] antiphon "In odorem" [capitula missing]; [none] antiphon "Pulchra es", capitula "Et radicavi", responsory "Speciosa es".
ff. 23v-24, Prayers added, including Salve Regina.
ff. 25-48, Extracts from the Penitential Psalms and Litanies.
ff. 49-88, Extracts from the Office des morts, according to the usage of Rouen, with the following responses: (1) Credo quod; (2) Qui Lazarum; (3) Domine quando; (4) Heu michi; (5) Ne recorderis; (6) Domine secundum; (7) Peccantem me; (8) Requiem eternam; (9) Libera me (see Leroquais, Office des morts. Répons des matines, Paris, BnF, nal 3163, fol. 45).
ff. 88-90v, Prayer O intemerata (incomplete at the end).
The leaves of this manuscript come from an untidy and very fragmentary bound Book of Hours, later enriched with an illuminated title ("Roman Missal", a misnomer) and 5 modern miniatures in the neo-Gothic style: Annunciation (f. 10), Nativity (f. 22), Baptism of Christ (f. 41), Christ Appearing to Mary Magdalene (f. 57), Flagellation of Christ (f. 74).
It comes from the de Champrépus family, with several notes relating to the de Champrépus and Le Comte families in the seventeenth century.
A few annotations and elements of a seventeenth-century livre de raison (sometimes barely legible). Parchment stained in places.
