Description
HOURS for the use of Chartres. Paris, Simon Vostre, 1506 [almanac for 1506-1520]. In-8 on vellum of [132] ff (sign. +8, b-o8, A-B8, C4); fawn basane, large light lozenge on boards, ornate spine, guilloche edges, gilt edges (19th century binding). Very rare book of hours for the use of the diocese of Chartres printed for Simon Vostre, bookseller and sworn bookbinder of the University of Paris from 1486 to 1521. This precious volume was printed in Gothic type and decorated with Simon Vostre's typographical mark, 14 large and 6 small metal-engraved figures. These engravings belong to a suite executed for Simon Vostre in 1495-1498 after models by the Master of the Très Petites Heures of Anne de Bretagne, a Parisian artist named after this famous manuscript (BnF, NAL 3120) whom Nicole Reynaud suggests is Jean d'Ypres (died 1508) and whom Ina Nettekoven calls the Master of the Rose of the Apocalypse in the Sainte-Chapelle. The edition does not have engraved borders, but rather a rare type of endpaper printed in red and black. A copy printed on vellum, ruled in red ink, rubricated and decorated with ornate endpapers and initials in gold, pink and blue. The engravings have been enhanced with a carefully executed later colour, except for the last one - the Last Judgement (f. n7v) - which has been preserved in black. Handwritten note on the title including the name Bailli, then Mes ancêtres estoient du diocese de Chartres. This book served them in 1506. Apparently a unicum, absent from Bohatta, Lacombe and Moreau.
