Description
JEAN DE MEUNG. Le Plaisant jeu du dodechedron de fortune, non moins récréatif que subtil et ingénieux, renouvellé et changé de sa première édition. Lyon, Jean Huguetan, 1581. In-8, fawn calf, spine decorated, red edges (17th century binding). Very rare Lyon edition of this divinatory book-game, also known as Jean de Meung's Magic Mirror. The original edition was published by François Gruget in Paris in 1556.
"This divinatory game, which uses a twelve-sided die - or dodecahedron - contains 144 questions classified according to the twelve astrological houses and connected to 1,728 oracles in French verse. These octosyllables are attributed to Jean de Meung: some of the author's sources of inspiration for the second part of the Roman de la Rose can be recognised [...]. An 'interactive' book that leads from one page or image to another before answering the question posed" (La Règle du jeu: la tradition ludique dans le patrimoine écrit, BSG, 2005).
Copy complete with two folded correspondence tables printed in red and black.
Binding worn, top hinge cracked, top cap missing, marginal wetness.
