Description
LEONARDO D'UDINE. Quadragesimal: Sertum fidei. S.l.n.d. [Delft, Jacob Jacobszoon van der Meer, 1480-1483]. In-folio of [166] (of 172) ff (signed a-t8 v6 x8); blond half calf, spine decorated with gilt fillets, green morocco title-pieces, spotted edges (Binding of the late 18th century). Second edition of this collection of Lenten sermons by the Italian preacher Leonardo of Udine (c. 1400-c. 1470), based on the first edition published in Deventer by Richard Pafraet in 1479 or 1480. A precious and very rare edition printed on the first presses in Delft, where Jacob Jacobszoon van der Meer established his workshop in January 1477. He first worked in association with Mauritius Yemantszoon until November 1479, then alone until 1487 or 1488. His material then passed to his successor Christian Snellaert. The present edition, printed in Gothic script on two columns, can be dated, according to the typographical material, between 26 September 1480 and 14 February 1483. Only five copies of this extremely rare incunabulum are known to exist in public collections - in Brussels, Göttingen, Halle, The Hague and Krakow. There are no copies in French or American collections, and the only copy cited by Goff is now in the Royal Library in The Hague. A rubricated copy decorated with a large watermarked initial painted in red and blue at the incipit and numerous red initials at the head of each chapter. A table of sermons written at the time in brown ink is found on one of the first blank leaves. From the library of Ned J. Nakles (New York, 2000, no. 171). The copy was later included in the sale entitled A Selection of Incunabula (London, 2004, n°129). Incomplete with 6 table pages (A1-6). Light worm damage to the last few leaves, tiny tears in the upper margin of the last three leaves, two pages stained (ff. g7-8). Joints cracked and rubbed, endpapers and paper renewed.
