Description
LUCRECE. De rerum natura libri vi. Florence, Filippo Giunta, 1512. In-8, brown calf, triple framed with cold-stamped fillets and frieze of tracery, cold fleurons at the corners and centre, three-ribbed spine, smooth edges (Binding of the period). This is the first edition published by the Giunta family, under the direction of Pier Candido Decembrio, who used corrections by the humanists Giovanni Pontano and Michele Marullo. This is the first small-format edition of Lucretius' great philosophical poem, the precursor of atomic physics, which had always been published in large format since its first printing in 1472, making it difficult to handle. Copy in contemporary stamped calf. Binding restored, spine rebacked, rare scattered foxing. Adams, L-1649 - Camerini, n°39 - Graesse, IV, 287.
