Description
MEDER (Johann). Parabola filii glutonis profusi atque prodigi nedum venuste verum etiam utiliter et devote. Basel, Michael Furter, 1510, small in-8, stamped fawn calf on wood, large roulette set with cold fillets, central rectangle decorated with a semis of fleurons on the first plate and diamond-shaped crosses on the second, spine with three double nerves, metal clasps (Binding of the period). Third edition of this collection of Lenten sermons on the parable of the prodigal son by the Franciscan preacher Johann Meder (1430-1518), a friend of Sébastien Brant. The first two editions were published by the same Basel printer in 1495 and 1497.
The text is printed on two columns in Gothic script. The title, in red and black, bears the printer's mark, which is repeated on the colophon and last leaf.
Remarkable illustration comprising eighteen full-page woodcuts (two of which are repeated) attributed to the "Master of Haintz Narr", one of Dürer's collaborators on the illustration of Sébastien Brant's Nave of Fools (Narrenschiff), published in Basel in 1494.
Bound in contemporary stamped fawn calf, complete with clasps.
Some handwritten marginalia. Eighteenth-century annotations on a flyleaf and at the top of the title.
From the Marcel Desjardin library (2013, n°47), with bookplate.
Without the last blank leaf. Binding restored, title leaf rebacked, wormholes throughout the volume.
Brunet, III, 1565 - VD16 M1855.
